How to Get Away with Murder – Skanks Get Shanked Recap
Viola Davis is on a war path as Annalise Keating; How to Get Away with Murder has to be the top show of the year and it’s only getting better. Last week, we left off with the Keating Four being caught after leaving the crime scene at the Hapstall Mansion. However, their captor was none other than Nate Lahey who we can assume is helping them after it’s revealed that he’s in-cahoots with Wes. So, this weeks episode picks up right after that as the police and paramedics arrive at the mansion and proceed to work on Annalise. As the paramedics are on their way to the hospital; Nate is driving the others away from the scene as Michaela receives a phone call. We aren’t told who is calling, but they make sure that Michaela acts normal while speaking to the caller. This is where the show cuts into the flashback and with this episode we go back four weeks before the events of Annalise’s shooting.
A Dying Wife’s Request:
After the initial start of the show; we begin the flashback of the events leading up to the shooting with Annalise receiving a call from Nate. However, it isn’t Nate who is calling her. On the other end of the phone is Nia Lahey (Enuka Okuma), Nate’s wife who is dying of cancer. She asks Annalise to come visit her in the hospital and although she has been sleeping with her husband; she obliges and shows up the next day. Annalise admits that she was scared in showing up, but Nia tells her that she admires her strength and asks her if she loves Nate. Not knowing how to answer her question; Nia jumps in and says that she needs her to love Nate because she has a favor to ask of her. Nia has been undergoing procedures and treatments to help her with the cancer and can no longer take it. She asks Annalise to use Frank and his connections to get her pills to help her end her life.
She hesitates at first and tells Nia that this is an inappropriate request to ask her for. Nia then tells her that she won’t be killing her; all she has to do is get her the pills and she’ll do the rest. Throughout the episode Annalise deals with the Hapstall siblings and a new murder case she receives, but it is evident that this request is mulling over in her mind as she seems distant while in court. Although she does seem conflicted about going through with this, she still asks Frank to get her the pills. However, when the episode begins coming to a close Annalise decides against it and tells Nia that she won’t do it. She tells her that she has thought about killing herself plenty of times throughout her life, but that if she doesn’t deserve to die that way; then a good woman like her definitely doesn’t deserve to.
Skanks Get Shanked:
This weeks case doesn’t just show Annalise doing what she does best it also shows how much the events of last season are taking a toll on both Wes and Connor. Teenager Zoey Mitchell has just murdered her best friend with two other girls. When the popular girls Molly and Megan take this to court and try to pin the whole thing on her; she looks to Annalise for help. Her story goes that Molly and Megan talked her into stabbing her best friend after she made moves on Molly’s boyfriend. The plan was to teach Rachel a lesson, but she had no idea how far things would go. During trial, a psychiatrist is brought in to diagnose Zoey as a sociopath who brainwashed the other two girls into committing the murder. Annalise then has the Keating Five go over files of his patient to try and find any mistake he made that could be used to throw out his diagnosis of Zoey. They succeed after finding a case where one of his patients patients murdered his family after the doctor gave him a clean bill of health. While on a recess, Laurel sees that Zoey is constantly on her phone and gets an uneasy feeling about it. Stealing it, she finds an app that contains video proof oh her and the other girls admitting to the murder and planning to do it again. She takes this discovery to Frank who then shows Annalise and Zoey’s parents.
Since her job is to keep Zoey from going to prison Annalise doesn’t hesitate when her parent’s ask her to get rid of the evidence. This however doesn’t sit well with Connor who then confronts Annalise about making the wrong choice in protecting her after seeing evidence that she will most likely kill again. When she doesn’t acknowledge this Connor takes actions into his own hands and copies the video before Frank gets rid of it and slips it to their opponent. This causes major issues when the defense uses it to provide further evidence that Zoey is the one to blame as she is the one who talks about killing someone else. However, it seems as if Connor’s words did get through to her as she uses the video now that it’s in the open to question one of the girls. In doing so she gets her riled up to the point where she begins to say they never wanted Zoey to be a part of their group. This in turn begins to gnaw at Zoey who then snaps and begins to yell at her that they were nothing without her and that she better watch her back because she’s next. In doing this she has proved that Zoey is guilty without outright saying that her client is guilty a sort of loophole without making herself look bad.
The Hapstall Siblings:
The last time we left off with the siblings; a picture of the two of them very close and intimate had been leaked to the media. This resulted in reports of the two being romantically and sexually involved to circulate making them seem guilty of murdering their parents. In order to find out whether this is true or not Annalise tasks Michaela with the job of prepping the siblings for the trial. She however, has an ulterior motive of sending Michaela as she wants her to use her, “boobs”, to try and find out if they are really sleeping together.
When she begins her mock questioning with Caleb, they butt heads a little as Caleb becomes sarcastic with her. He starts accusing her of not being on his side; that no one is on their side and she has no idea what he or his sister are going through. Unsuccessful with Caleb, she covers more ground with Catherine who then reveals something interesting that would put everything to rest. She tells Michaela that she can prove she isn’t sleeping with her brother because she is a virgin. Michaela takes this to Annalise who then asks Catherine to go to the doctors to examine her and obtain proof she is a virgin. She agrees and goes through with the examination proving she is indeed a virgin; this helps Annalise by giving them an out from the accusation that they killed their parents after discovering their romance and cutting them from the will.
Throughout the episode, Wes had been acting out a little as he was struggling to keep Levi under control and Nate from discovering the existence of Levi. However, he is unsuccessful as he finds out that Levi is still seeing Michaela after he warned him not to. He also lets it slip to Nate that Levi is working with him after they find out that Frank had called a friend who works at the cemetery three time the night Rebecca went missing. Although they make a small breakthrough into her disappearance, Nate brings up the fact that Levi may not be who he says he is and if Wes has even thought about the fact that maybe Levi is lying to him. While they are arguing about this they don’t realize that Annalise has walked out of the hospital and spotted them.
This leads into the closing scene of the episode as Nate has driven the group to Michaela’s apartment building and are bickering as to whether she can do what she has to. Now, my first thought was that she is meeting Levi as he’s the one she has been seeing and obviously has a vendetta against Annalise. However, I was completely wrong as it isn’t Levi she is meeting it’s a distressed Caleb.
Why is she meeting Caleb? Where is Catherine? Is Connor going to stay against Annalise? And we still don’t know who shot Annalise!
