How To Get Away With Murder: Mid-season Finale
After eight thrilling episodes of murder, secrets, and lies we finally learn what happened on that fateful night at the Hapstall mansion. However, on top of everything that leads to this night; we finally get what we’ve all been waiting for. We finally learn who shot Annalise, and boy were we in for a heck of an episode, but it doesn’t end there. Oh no, even after all this has been dumped on our laps and we’re too busy being shocked as to what has just happened we get one more thing thrown at us. Now, I love cliffhangers, and this has to be one of the best cliffhangers for a TV show that I have ever seen, so if you missed last nights chaotic mid-season finale be warned that major SPOILERS lie ahead.
The Gathering at the Mansion:
Did you really think I was just going to tell you who shot Annalise? Oh no, we are going to start with a brief retelling of the events that lead to the shooting. The last episode left off with Caleb revealing the murder weapon to Michaela after just having done the deed. He tells her that he found it the other night, and suspects that Catherine might actually be the killer. At this point, we are flashing back and forth between them and Catherine who meeting up with Phillip who we learned was at the murder scene. So, could Catherine be working with Phillip? Well, that is still unclear as we still don’t know what happened the night her parents were murdered. However, the revealing of this gun is what prompts Annalise and crew to meet at the mansion. At this time however, Nate is on some thin ice as Sinclair has footage of him at the station the night Phillip was taken in for questioning. She riles him up enough that he snaps and begins to yell at her in front of the whole station prompting her to file a lawsuit against him for harassment which almost gets him fired. The reason as to why this is important is because Annalise gets a call from him afterwards saying that they have another problem with Sinclair. Although, we don’t hear what he says we get a shot of Annalise with terror on her face. Now, we’ve seen Annalise go through a lot and break down, but whatever he tells her has her frightened to the core.
The Death of Emily Sinclair:
In the last episodes we learned the fate of Emily Sinclair at the mansion. However, we don’t know why she was there or why she was pushed off the roof by Bonnie, until last night. After receiving the call from Nate; Annalise shows up at the mansion telling the others that plans have changed and that Emily is on her way there. She tells them that they are going to tell Sinclair everything that has happened after finding the gun and Catherine running away. After discovering the connection between her and Phillip and the gun in her room; it was decided that Annalise would now represent Caleb only and by sharing this information with Sinclair it would help in declaring him innocent. She also tells him that he needs to leave and asks Michaela to take him back to her apartment however, he refuses until Michaela promises to stay and keep him updated. At this point I’m wondering as to why she was so adamant that he leave. I knew Sinclair was dead so I began to wonder if she had him leave because she was planning to kill her when she got to the mansion. It seemed like a good scenario, but I was way off base because when a car pulls in to the driveway it isn’t Sinclair who’s driving it’s Bonnie. While the Keating Four are inside; Annalise meets her outside and walks to the back of the car where it is revealed that Sinclair is ALREADY dead.
Yup, her body is stuffed into the trunk of the car, but did Bonnie kill to protect Annalise again? Not quite, after the reveal that she was already dead before arriving at the mansion we are taken back a couple of hours to find out who killed her. Earlier on in the episode it was revealed that Asher’s father had committed suicide. It’s assumed he did it after his illegal activity was leaked to the press, but knowing how this show operates I’m sure that’s not what happened. Back to Sinclair, as she’s leaving her office, (I assume as it’s not established what parking structure they’re in), Asher rolls up next to her in his car saying it’s all her fault his dad committed suicide. Sinclair is indifferent however, and says that he deserved it because he was a bad man. Asher of course doesn’t take this too well and runs her over! What I find a little funny about this is that he calls Bonnie immediately and just sits there waiting for her with Sinclair’s dead body under the car.
_____ Shot Annalise:
Things are finally coming together as the shocking events of that night are being revealed one by one. Which means that the next big reveal has to be who shot Annalise, but what is going on now that Annalise has another dead body to worry about. Well, she involves the others of course by dumping Sinclair’s lifeless corpse in front of them and then telling Asher what really happened to Sam when Connor tries to leave effectively getting them all involved.
With everyone now involved Annalise begins to explain what they are going to do. She called Sinclair over to the mansion to show her the new evidence, but Catherine showed up unexpectedly and then killed her. However, the others begin to voice concerns such as not knowing for sure that Catherine is quilty and killed her parents. Annalise then replies that they knew Nate was innocent and had no problem framing him for Sam’s murder. When they mention that they don’t even know where Catherine is Annalide replies that it’s covered. Of course with Frank being the one in charge of that we know it’s not exactly a legal method.
With everyone having their own assignment Annalise begins to leave a trail of phone calls to corroborate the plan of Sinclair showing up. And finally, finally we find out who shot Annalise. For a moment I thought it could have been Phillip who showed up outside of the mansion looking for Catherine, but he never entered. In order to make it look believable Annalise calls the police and tells them she’s been shot and needs help. It’s all a part of the plan! After making the call the Keating Four are unsure of what she is doing as she didn’t mention this part. She quickly shoves the gun to Connor and tells him to shoot her in the leg. Of course he is hesitant and doesn’t do it, so she begins to yell at him all the reason as to why he should hate her and do it. At the same time the others are yelling at him not to do it, and all of a sudden there is chaos as Connor has a gun in his hand and four different people yelling at him, but he doesn’t do it as Michaela jumps in front of him. He drops the gun and walks away, Annalise then picks it up and holds it out to Michaela telling her to think about her life and that she needs to do it, but she doesn’t and runs after Connor. All the while there is an eerie soundtrack accompanying this scene adding even more suspense just holding you captive on the edge of your seats. Annalise hands the gun to Wes and tells him to shoot her in the leg, that she’ll be fine, but he refuses. Who is going to shoot her!? Everyone is refusing so who is left? She looks over to Laurel and tells her that she has been through worse with her father and that she can do it, and for a moment it looks as if Laurel is the one to do it, but no she walks away too. So who does it if everyone there has refused? In a last ditch effort Annalise pulls out the big guns and reveals something she knows will work. As Wes walks away with with Laurel; Annalise shout that Rebecca is dead. And it works, Wes stops in his tracks and turns around as she tells him about all the times she lied to him, but Annalise didn’t expect him to react the way he does and shoots her in the gut instead of her leg. You guys, Wes is the shooter! Who called it?
Wow, talk about a climactic ending, but that’s not it people. Oh no, even after all that the producers said no it’s not enough. As Wes stands over her with the gun he has a flashback of when he was a boy. In this flashback we see Annalise with Eve standing behind a two way mirror as little Wes is talking about how he found his dead mother. And then Eve says, “good god Annalise, what did we do”?.
What!? So this means she’s been involved with Wes for like ever! What did they do!? What is Wes going to do? What is going to happen!? How can they make us wait till February 11? Well, until February it is everyone. Make sure to follow, like, share, and subscribe all things That Geek Show.
