WWE Extreme Rules Preview & Predictions
Tonight live on the WWE Network, for one night only, sports entertainment will get extreme. Your favorite WWE Superstars will take it to the limit on a night where the only rules are Extreme Rules. In this new era led by Shane and Stephanie McMahon, will WWE World Champion Roman Reigns retain his title against AJ Styles, a man who will stop at nothing to be the top dog in WWE? One of my favorite pay per views of the year is upon us; Spanish announce tables will be broken, blood will be shed (hopefully), egos will be crushed (sorry Kalisto), and predictions will be made here in my in-depth preview of WWE Extreme Rules. Let’s get to it!
Kickoff Show: Baron Corbin vs. Dolph Ziggler (No Disqualification)
Extreme Rules kicks off with a No DQ match between Dolph Ziggler and Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal winner Baron Corbin. After making an impact in his debut at WrestleMania 32, Baron Corbin has been dominant in his path to becoming a rising star in the WWE. One Superstar he has set his sights on in the past couple weeks is Dolph Ziggler; countless attacks from behind led to harsh retaliation from the show off and now the two have bad blood towards each other.
Prediction: Baron Corbin
Sorry Dolph, but it’s Barons time now. I wasn’t a huge Baron Corbin guy in NXT, but I think there’s something special with this guy. With his size, strength, ability and if booked right, this No DQ match should be pretty entertaining.
Intercontinental Championship Fatal 4 Way: The Miz(c) vs. Cesaro vs. Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens
Tonight we witness one of the greatest fatal 4 way matches in history, when the brash and cocky champion The Miz defends his Intercontinental Championship against Sami Zayn, the “Swiss Superman” Cesaro, and “The Prizefighter” former Intercontinental Champion Kevin Owens. These four combatants have one goal in mind and will fight to the end to claim the prize. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn continue their storied personal rivalry against The Miz and Cesaro with the stakes at an all time high.
Prediction: The Miz
Yes people. The Miz with the IC Title is what’s best for business right now. He is one of the best heels on the roster, great on the mic, he puts on pretty good matches, and hello–Maryse is back. Miz, along with Cesaro, Zayn, and Owens can make the midcard scene mean something again. The Miz is the guy who can bring prestige back to the belt. Mark my words smarks, The Miz will make the Intercontinental Championship great again!
Asylum Match: Chris Jericho vs. Dean Ambrose
Dean Ambrose looks to finally finish his problems with Chris Jericho at Extreme Rules. Things got personal when Jericho’s Highlight Reel was replaced with a new show, the “Ambrose Asylum” hosted by Dean Ambrose. Much to the dismay of Jericho, he took matters into his own hands by smashing Ambrose with his beloved plant Mitch; that would send the Lunatic Fringe over the edge. Now Dean Ambrose looks to settle the score by making Y2J play in his world: the asylum.
Prediction: Dean Ambrose
After that disappointing No Holds Barred match with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania, Dean needs to win this match to win his credibility back. Do I expect Chris Jericho to go all out in this match? Not really, but something spectacular needs to happen. Other than my lowered expectations for this match, what is the point of the weapons hanging from the cage? This match sounds a lot like something I watched AJ Styles wrestle in 2008… oh yeah I think it was called Lethal Lockdown. Yeah whatever happened to that company, we do not know.
Texas Tornado Tag Team Match: The Usos vs. Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows
It will be tag team warfare when Jimmy and Jey Uso take on the team of Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows in a Texas Tornado match. These two teams look to gain the upper hand in the war between The Club and The Bloodline, led by AJ Styles and Roman Reigns respectively. Which team will survive the war and come out on top?
Prediction: Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows
Anderson and Gallows can be a top tag team in WWE, and if they can knock off the former tag team champions that would be a huge notch in their belts. So just let the boys get the win.
United States Championship: Kalisto(c) vs. Rusev
Throughout Kalisto’s United States title reign he has faced obstacle upon obstacle, but there will be no bigger challenge than the “Bulgarian Brute” Rusev. Over the past couple of weeks, Rusev has had the upper hand on the champion by brutally attacking him and his partner Sin Cara, vowing to “eat Kalisto’s big heart”. Will the underdog champion be able to handle the onslaught of the challenger and retain his title, or will Rusev crush his competition?
Time to pull the trigger on making Rusev the dominant mid card champion again. I can see him squashing Kalisto, just to see him feud with John Cena again.
WWE Tag Team Championship: The New Day (c) vs. The Vaudevillians
The New Day will take a trip to the bygone era when they go toe to toe with the old school aficionados, Simon Gotch and Aiden English–The Vaudevillians. The New Day have been taunting their challengers for the past couple of weeks, while the fiery team of Gotch and English continue to show the WWE Universe they mean business. Will the power of the Booty O’s drive the unicorns to victory, or will the tag team scene encounter a new era?
Prediction: THE NEW DAY!!!
Oh readers… don’t you dare be sour! The world-famous two-time champs will retain their belts, and we shall feel the power of the new day… until Enzo Amore comes back, and he and Big Cass win the belts. I like the Vaudevillians; they are a really good heel team, but them winning the belts would be too soon, and I would never predict against The New Day. Why you ask? Because… NEW DAY ROCKS!!!
WWE Women’s Championship: Charlotte(c) vs. Natalya ( Submission Match)
Two family legacies collide when Charlotte defends her Women’s Championship against Natalya. After getting screwed over at WWE Payback, Natalya would want nothing more than to make Charlotte tap out and claim the Championship she knows she deserves. Charlotte feels she is the most dominant woman in the WWE, and the universe should put some respect on her name. With Hall of Fame father Ric Flair banned from ringside, the champion has a lot to prove: will she prevail, or will the challengers heart and drive catapult her to victory?
Charlotte’s reign as champion has been a really good one, but Nattie’s time is now; she deserves to be Women’s Champion. Look for this to be a definite match of the night candidate.
WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. AJ Styles (Extreme Rules Match)
In the main event, Roman Reigns goes one on one with the “Phenomenal” AJ Styles in an Extreme Rules match. Two fierce competitors will go to war, in a rivalry that has picked up in intensity since their battle at WWE Payback. The champion Roman Reigns wants to continue to prove that he is “The Guy”, by defeating the best professional wrestler in the world today: AJ Styles. Ever since his friends Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows made their way to WWE, AJ has gained confidence and says he will do whatever it takes to knock down the champ. Last Monday night on Raw, a brawl ensued after The Club faced the Usos in a tag team match, which led Roman and AJ to beat each other down with steel chairs. Emphatically, a Styles Clash would be the determining factor on Monday night… but will that be the case tonight?
Prediction: Roman Reigns
Roman Reigns will win this match. My reasoning being I feel WWE is going to call a huge audible, and call up Finn Balor pretty soon to enhance the story-line with AJ Styles. Finn will interfere, along with Anderson and Gallows, to screw over AJ. This would lead to a Styles vs Balor feud that I feel would be pretty awesome. Even though Styles wasn’t the official leader of New Japan’s “Bullet Club”, it has been implied in WWE that he is the leader of “The Club”. And since AJ was jumped out of the group prior to his departure from Japan, just like Finn Balor, was it would be quite interesting to see the dynamic of whose side Anderson and Gallows will stand on. As far as Roman Reigns goes, he will most likely lose the belt to a returning Seth Rollins… or even better, he will lose to John Cena.
